Cherokee Information
At one time, all Cherokee Children were given Cherokee names because English was not spoken. Non-Indian cutlture and the English language began encroaching upon the Cherokee people through inter marriage, illegal intruders, and the missionaries. At the time of allotment in the early 1900's, clerks for the Dawes Commission could not pronouce many Cherokee names, so English ones were given. Also, at this time the woman was displaced as the head of her household, and the Cherokee society was acculturated into the non-Indian custom of the man being the head of the household. The husband's name became the last name for his wife and children. At this time, the Dawes Commission clerks also began issuing English names to many families.
Through all of these attempts to change the Cherokee way of life, one thing most families held onto was the naming of their children. Although English names were given and appeared on hospital and state birth certificates, the family elders continued to give their children Cherokee names which are used in the home. Many Cherokee names have no literal known translation...they are just 'names'.
